I love East Carolina University's mascot. Why can't Ithaca have something cool like a pirate? It's so much easier to depict than a bomber. After all, who even knows what kind of "bomber" Ithaca's mascot is supposed to be? If anyone really DOES know and I'm just being ignorant, let me know. Much appreciated.

Anyways, bought myself some ECU apparel today.. arrrrgh!

the TIE Bomber as seen in Star Wars. It is a little known fact that the President of Ithaca during the 70s was a huge Star Wars fan, his favorite ship being the TIE Bombers. He was such a huge fan that he gradually started referring to Ithaca teams as the bombers. When it started to catch on he went into the archives and changed all the old records so that it appeared as if Ithaca was always the bombers.

  3. You're on the right track Glo but that is not the full story... I believe THIS is the bomber that Ithaca is named for...

    http://www.mariowiki.com/images/8/87/MKwii_Bob-omb.jpg

The Bob-omb character from the Mario series who made its first appearance in the game Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988). The Bob-ombs were semi-common enemies that worked for the tyrannical frog Wart. They were often dropped from the sky by the vulture-like Albatosses.

You see, during his childhood, the (future) president of Ithaca College in the 70's was shown an old film reel depicting the bomber airplanes from WWII. He was fascinated by these planes and the bombs that they carried and became heavily interested in the technology of explosives. He became so obsessed with bombs and explosives that he started working on a time machine to allow him to go back in time and see first hand how they were originally developed.

He became the president of Ithaca College in the early 70's but had not given up on his dream. He was working on the final touches of his time machine when the first Star Wars movie came out in the late 70s. Naturally he became a huge fan because of the similarities between the movie and the work he himself was doing. And you are correct, Glo. His favorite ship was in fact the TIE Bomber. Although the movie did play a vital roll in the naming of the Ithaca College Mascot, it was not the TIE Bomber that had the ultimate influence. But it was the movie that changed his whole plan from traveling back in time to check out the bombs of the past, to traveling into the future to see how bomb technology would progress and advance down the road.

He set his sights on 10 years into the future... and his time machine worked like a charm. He landed in the year 1988 and began studying our culture. This is when he came upon the Super Mario Series and first laid eyes on the Bob-omb. He knew instantly that this was the perfect technology... a bomb with feet and eyes that you could wind up and would walk around aimlessly until it blew the fuck out of something.

He traveled back to his original time and was going to tell everyone about what he had discovered, but realized that this could upset the whole space-time continuum and change everything. He knew what he had to do... he destroyed his time machine and erased all evidence that it ever existed.

But he couldn't stop thinking about the Bob-omb and its all-mighty epicness, and he wanted to honor in it in some way. Since he was the president of Ithaca College he decided that he wanted all the sports teams to be referred to as the Bob-ombers.

He went to the athletic director and told him of his wish, and the athletic director was all for it. But the athletic director thought that the president had merely stuttered when he said 'Bob-ombers'... hence the name of all of the Ithaca College athletic teams from that point on became... The Bombers.

How do I know all of this you ask?

    ...Wikileaks.

  5. Good old Wikileaks. I only got my information from the publicly available files hidden deep within the Ithaca College and National Archives. I hate to admit it but i forgot how much valuable information was released on wikileaks and therefore neglected to check it. Thank you for digging up the truth Joel.
